United Nations exposed,... once again

UNWatch is a Geneva based watchdog. They often expose the hypocrisy and biased approach of UN organizations. Yesterday a letter from Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of UNWatch, to de Editor was published in Jerusalem Post.

An excerpt which says it all:

(...) First, Falk's UN title [Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, ed.] is deliberately deceptive. The actual terms of his mandate do not address the overall "situation of human rights" in the area concerned. Rather, the Arab-controlled council decided in 1993 to investigate only "Israel's violations of the principles and bases of international law." That means Hamas brutality against Israelis and Palestinians alike is entirely excluded.

Falk's is the only UN mandate that is inherently one-sided, presumptive of guilt and immune from regular review. What kind of person would accept such a biased mandate? (...)

Tibet

Four days ago, I received a mailing from Byblos Reizen, in which an excerpt of a travelogue on Tibet was mentioned. It was written by writer and actress Munda de la Marre and I believed it to be worth mentioning:

"Als het echt waar is, als hij dit werkelijk nastreeft, al die uren bidden voor anderen. Ik voel hier in deze grote de pijn van wereld over mij heen trekken. De onnodige oorlogen en ruzies die wij voeren. Het geschreeuw en gekwetter om aandacht om iets te bereiken voor onszelf. Ik voel mij gevangen in mijn eigen egoïsme. Ik huil om de ellende van de mensen in deze wereld, En hier zit ik dan na een lange,uitputtende reis voor een eenvoudige man. En deze eenvoudige lieve man bevraag ik waar mijn geluk en ontwikkeling ligt en hij antwoordt: ’Wij zitten hier niet om zelf gelukkig te worden of een beter karma te krijgen. Wij zitten hier voor anderen.’ Ik weet dat dit het beste antwoord is dat ik kon krijgen."

English is fine. 'Bottled poetry' even better. It brougth to my mind the following poem of Ella Wheeler Wilcox. Enjoy.

Introduction

Deze weblog is bedoeld om te fungeren als een overzichtelijke weergave van interessante links, verhaaltjes, nieuwsberichten, boeken, tv-programma's, etcetera.

Waarom heet het bottled poetry (en staat labrusca in het adres)? Nou, eigenlijk was deze weblog bedoeld voor het evauleren van lekkere of minder lekkere wijnen. Maar daar is het nooit van gekomen...

Om een mooie weblog titel en adres niet verloren te laten gaan in het niets en aangezien poezie geen grenzen kent en zeker niet alleen maar over wijn hoeft te gaan, leek mij deze weblognaam ook uitermate geschikt voor een andere inhoud.

Een goede wijnrecensie kan dan nog altijd erbij geplaatst worden! :)

Verder vroeg ik me af welke taal we het beste kunnen hanteren: het Nederlands of het Engels.
Ik opteer voor het Engels, zodat een groter publiek kan smullen van onze bijdragen. Let me know.
